"Stomping Ground" book release party 12/3

I'm very excited to announce the release of my new book, "Stomping Ground." It's an examination of the connections between bellydance and spirituality -- I look at historical uses of dance as ritual and then provide exercises you can use to integrate dance into your daily meditational/spiritual practice.This book is a great holiday gift for yourself or the bellydancer on your list. Dance Fundamentals (Level 1) – 6-7pm
Tribal Combinations (Level 2) – 7-8pm

Join ucanto to learn to dance ATS by drilling the basics in fun combinations in Dance Fundamentals. Using both slow movements and fast steps, we'll get you dancing in your first class! Learn all basic movements and group formations in a 6-week cycle including posture and body awareness, zils, and music. You are welcome to drop-in on this class after the course has started as we have plenty of review built into each class. There will be an introduction to partner and group dancing. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early.
Tribal Combinations will refine individual technique by drilling basic steps and their variations in creative combinations and new moves in this 12-week cycle. Although open to all levels, Level 2 is best used simultaneously with Dance Fundamentals as there are no descriptions of the basic steps. You need an understanding of basic steps and partner and group dancing (Level 1).

SPECIAL CLASS COMBO
This 1 1/2 hour class will include both Dance Fundamentals (Level 1) and Tribal Combinations (Level 2). Each class normally includes its own warm up time, but for this SPECIAL Class Combo (due to the current studio schedule) the class will have the beginning warm up and then just dance, dance, dance.

What is ‘Fusion Belly Dance’?

Fusion can mean many things to many people. I like the vagueness of the word… It leaves a lot of room to experiment and find your own voice. To me, it is mixing different styles and genres of music and dance into the dancer’s own individual interpretation and expression of their art form. My own personal stylization, or Fusion, is a mix of Tribal Fusion, Hip Hop bits I love to use, and something I call ‘Gooey-gothic’, which is something I’ve sort of created over the last year of performing in an Industrial Art & Music show.

About the workshop:

We will be jumping down the rabbit hole of ‘Fusion Belly Dance’ each week, where I will share the foundations of my favorite moves, explore stylization and touch on subjects like; musicality in dance, and intent in performance. I hope to challenge and inspire you to think outside the belly dance box and discover your own groove, with exercises in breaking the rules, listening to your body, and increasing your intuition.

This is an intermediate to advanced class focusing on my own funky stylization. This is treated like an intensive and we will be moving fairly quickly. I won’t be teaching any ATS or Cabaret, so it is essential that the students already have a basic knowledge of belly dance mechanics as taught in some of the more traditional disciplines, so we can move beyond the basics and get to the juicy stuff. There are many wonderful teachers to learn from first to build a solid foundation. Essentially, I want you to know the rules before I tell you how to break them!

Balance, Strength and Skill come together in this workshop focusing on the use of props in floorwork. We will start with an intensive stretch and pilates warm up to get your quads and abs ready. Then go into detailed descriptions of Tribal Improv Floorwork technique. And finally add balancing props.
This workshop is open to all levels but be dressed to stretch and work. Definitely bring knee pads. Recommended props to bring include swords, candles and pots. (We will also have a few to lend)

Raqs Steady Eddie grew up in the 1980's during the birth of Hip Hop culture. Growing up in the break dance era, Eddie brings a strong hip hop background to his form of fusion dance creating a unique and original expression. Beginning Tribal Fusion Choreography

Come and learn a fun beginning Tribal Fusion Choreography with Tayissa Blue. We’ll spend several weeks learning a new combination each week. Classes will build from week to week. However, if you have minimal experience with bellydance then drop-ins are fine!

Additionally, at the end of the session the will be an OPTIONAL performance opportunity on April 15 at a local Retirement Community. We will also schedule a costuming workshop for any whom are participating in the performance to be held at my workshop in Burien!

1:45 - 3:45: Egyptian Pop Choreography "Fakerny": Utilizing steps direct from Cairo, Astryd presents an original choreography to one of the latest pop songs of Cairo's Arabic hit radio. She combines graceful moves and steps with saucy gestures to highlight the meaning of this hot pop song, which musically retains a lovely oriental feel.

ROCK SOLID FUSION FOUNDATION: Building Your Practice From The Ground Up!
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. Rose will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements -- great for any style of bellydance! This exciting tribal fusion workshop will include just a taste of Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. This class will accomodate all levels of experience.

ICING THE CAKE: Contemporary Tribal Fusion
We'll kick things up a bit here! Level changes, fancy footwork, and spins are the name of the game. We'll work on more advanced layers and a short choreography highlighting Rose's contribution to contemporary tribal fusion belly dance. Because we will be building on our foundation from the first class, it is recommended that you take both classes. Previous belly dance experience requested if taken without workshop 1.

Hey Everybody,
It is getting close, real close to our fabulous show.

From Country to Cairo: A music program for the evening that will include raw folk music from the peasant country to sophisticated classics for the theater with a cabaret touch.

As you may imagine we are super excited to have such a stellar dancer line-up.

Think you've seen Ruby at her best? Wait till you experience her perform to the thick lush sound of H.O.T She owns the stage, a true powerhouse of dance.

And Suzanna, producer and performer of several monthly events. She is a rising star and the picture classic raqs sharqi with the skills to back it up.

Then there is Delilah, pretty much enough said right there. She will captivate you with her deep connection to and command of the music like no one else can.

And Then....You! We have a marathon open dance session for everybody to shake off the winter to the sounds of H.O.T. I guarantee you'll drop before we stop!

And Then just when you think you had enough we have the after party featuring Eastern Dub sounds of DJ Muad Deep. More open floor for the rest of the night.

Have you seen Columbia City Theater? This place is AWESOME!!!! old vaudeville charm, exposed brick walls, red velvet through out. Professional lights and sound, great stage, intimate cabaret seating, and every seat in the house is good.
Honestly this is one of the best place to see a show.

Oh yeah then there is our Brand New Cd "Beledi" will be available for the 1st time. I have to say it is the Bomb. We spent 10 months on this project and spent a whopping 10 grand to make it, but when you hear the think layers upon layers on sound you will no where every dollar went!

Bhangra Workshop With Habib! 7.17.08

Bhangra Burner Thursday July 17th at VDP

The workshop begins with a warm-up, followed by an entire
Bhangra choreography which Habib taught to a sold out class
at the Las Vegas BellyDance Intensive in Sept. 2007.

Habib will be vending and have DVD's for sale of the choreography at the workshop.
The choreography can be performed with one or many dancers, class ends with
a stretching cool down.

Bring water and wear comfortable clothing.

Hip scarfs and coin belts will be useless.

I mentioned to you about a charity concert that I am co-organizing. Can you check with your dance group and any other performance groups you know, and see if they would be interested in joining the concert? The event will be on the afternoon of Sunday June 29, held in the Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, with BBQ, silent auction and a FREE CONCERT. We are looking for musicians and performance groups that are willing to perform for free, in exchange for audience exposure. We expect to have up to 400 people attending so it will be an exciting occasion! I would love for the concert to be multi-cultural, so your dance group will be a great addition. Death Posture Presents FLOOD Jan 19th!!!! Seattle

Death Posture presents a new butoh performance work, FLOOD, at the Chapel performance space at Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford on January 19th.

Dancer Vanessa Skantze lived in New Orleans for over a decade, where she cofounded the ensemble Death Posture in 2001. Less than a year after her arrival in Seattle to join her dance partner Alex Ruhe, Katrina fell upon the Gulf Coast. Vanessa began conceiving of this piece after her first return to New Orleans in July 2006. FLOOD journeys through invocations of the spirit of the land and the city of New Orleans with all her revelry and anguish, as well as imagery drawn from the catastrophe of the storm and the wrenching loss and devastation in its wake. FLOOD is danced by Death Posture (Vanessa Skantze and Alex Ruhe), Sheri Brown, Helen Thorsen, Azrael, and Lin Lucas. Original score is created by celadon and natazatan of In the Deep Museum along with percussionist Dean Moore.

Introduction to Tribal Belly Dance
Sundays 6-8pm, January 13- February 3

This introductory class focuses on the use of improv choreography within Tribal Belly Dance. Both classic movements and unique derivatives of ATS are taught with an emphasis placed on posture. The two hour format gives students the opportunity to explore movements thoroughly before applying improvisational choreography concepts. All movements are taught with a double staged format that utilizes both sides of the body. Each class includes a yoga inspired warm up and a low impact workout that helps strengthen the core

World Rhythm Festival Celebration of Youth Day

Hello everyone, here’s another reminder the World Rhythm Festival is scheduled for April 25-27, 2008 and the deadline for proposals is November 30th 2007.

We are also sending a call out to all Drum and Dance teachers to participate in our Celebration of Youth Day. Teachers of the youth classes are free to present any material that fits into our broad program goals. Facilitators may also have the option of leading two
sessions back to back (~50 minutes each allowing time for movement between workshops). We are letting the adults who bring the children know that they will need to attend the classes with the children. So they will not be leaving the children in your care!

The focus of Celebration of Youth Day is to support and encourage our youth 5 years old and up to express themselves through music and dance and showcase their talents. As schools will be in session during that week we are inviting schools to arrange field trips to
come and join us. We are also inviting the community at large to participate and support Celebration of Youth Day.

The day will look like this: 10:00 12:00 workshops
12:15-2:00 Youth

2:15- 4:00 workshops

Martha Graham Dance Company performs masterpieces, some danced at The Moore in 1936...

Recognized as one of the great pioneers of modern dance, Martha Graham lives today in the vibrant performances of the MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY. As part of its 80th Anniversary Season, the Company presents a selection of historic works including Graham's early solo works Lamentation (1930) and Satyric Festival Song (1932) performed at the theatre in 1936. These works capture the essence of the early days of the MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY and pay homage to their founder whose choreography revolutionized the world of dance.

The evening's repertoire is rounded out by the solo Serenata Morisca (1916), the eleven women cast of Sketches from 'Chronicle' (1936), the lyrical Graham classic Diversion of Angels (1948) and Ardent Song (Redux) (2007), a newly re-imagined version of a lost Graham work. The early solo works showcased vividly recall the MARTHA GRAHAM DANCE COMPANY's 1936 Moore Theatre engagement.

In more than 180 works created during a career of over 50 years, Graham illuminated the depth of human emotion through stylized movements that were intense, angular, direct and primal. In her lifetime, Graham freed the art of dance by providing a new dance language and new concepts while revolutionizing the stage and music with her creative perfectionism.

Seattle Nightlife

This Thursday the Seattle City Council will be meeting to discuss the city's nightlife policies and possibly vote on a limited license for clubs that the city could later revoke if the club does not meet their requirements. In plain english, any club that is required to purchase this license can be shut down and put out of business at any time the city and our favorite mayor decide so.

The council will be taking public comment at this meeting.

It's important for us as a community to represent our interests and show that there is a large base of constituents willing to stand up for their rights and their way of life. There will be plenty of pressure there from the uber-rich condo owners who think they can buy homes in a club district and shut them down with noise complaints willing to make campaign donations to get their way. We have to show that we are just as powerful a force and that we ARE paying attention. Please come down and let your voice be heard, if only by being present.

The meeting will take place this Thursday August 16th at 6pm in West Seattle at the Highpoint Community Center, 6920 34th Ave. SW.

Seeking models for Soma work (structural integration)

Family and Friends,

I am attending the Soma Institute of Neuromuscular Integration, studying a specific style of bodywork much different than other massage modalities. The program begins in late September 2007 and goes into February 2008. For the program I will need 4 models to work with as we go through the 11 session series together. I am hoping to have 4 committed models by the first week of September.
The commitment requires the model to attend every session for eleven weeks at the Soma Institute campus, with a $50 fee for each session.
Each model will keep the same scheduled time every week, the times offered are;
Saturdays: 10 am 1pm 330 pm
Sundays: 1 pm
Although the cost, time, and distance can seem like a hindrance, I assure you this opportunity is priceless for anyone interested in learning more about their body and the healing arts. The school is located 45 min. from Seattle in Buckley, at the foot of Mt. Rainier.
“Soma” is not massage. We are in the field of Structural Integration which includes Rolfing & Hellerwork. Structural Integration has a specific intent to aid the body back into an aligned position in relation to gravity. This is achieved by following a designed “recipe” in an 11 session series that helps guide the muscle and fascia from a place of past patterns of trauma and injury back to the naturally intended positioning. Photographs of before and after prove every time that the work “sticks” and the body moves into alignment even after the work has completed. As a model you will see changes in your body. And with the physical changes comes the potential for a host of life changes.
I will take the first 4 people who commit. If you yourself are not interested, or cannot work it, It would be of great help if you will pass it on to anyone who might really benefit from this opportunity. People who have not recieved 10-session work and/or those whom have chronic issues of any sort (scoliosis, asthma, arthritis, allergies, past injuries) are put at the top of the list because this is where we will most likely witness the greatest affects. This "list" though does not exclude anyone either.

Choreographer Rachel Närhi invites dancers and fire performers to audition for a ground-breaking performance opportunity incorporating contemporary dance and fire performance. Auditions will be held Tuesday, August 7th from 6pm-9pm at Velocity Dance Center in Seattle, Studio 3 (Third Floor). Performance is set to premiere for a short, limited run in April 2008.

Audition applicants should be 18+ years, have solid experience in modern, jazz or ballet styles and/or a fire performer that is a “good mover” and willing to learn complex dance choreography. If you are only experienced in one performance form, we welcome the chance to see you anyway if you are willing to learn! Must be able to: work collaboratively with choreographer and other dancers, attend 1-2 rehearsals a week starting late August 2007, use props and tools creatively, and perform with fire and handle dangerous chemicals safely (or be willing to learn how).

Please arrive early and warmed-up with a resume. Wear tight-fitting clothing that you can move in and be prepared to learn modern choreography, show a 1 minute solo, and attend a short interview. Seattle Bollywood Dance Classes!

Do you adore the bollywood dance sensation that has swept the globe? Have you always wanted to learn the intricate movements, dramatic facial expressions, and graceful stylings such as those of Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit? Come join our Bollywood class in the Seattle U-District!!!

Our instructor is the phenomenal Nalini, dance extraordinaire. She has studied and taught the Indian classical dance Kathak and Bollywood, her passion, since she was 13 years old. She is also a famous award-winning bellydancer, with a fine arts degree in dance choreography.

Her classes are challenging, inspiring, tons of fun, and focused on making your dancing all it can be. As her students, we are her biggest fans, her friends, and we welcome any to come and try it out! Don't be mislead - it's hard! When I first started, I wasn't sure I could do it. But it doesn't take long before you are jumping, gesturing, head-bobbling away to the sounds of Kajra Re, Choli Ke Peeche, and many other classics.

The class is listed as a performance class because many of the students wish to perform the dances we are learning as a group, however, performance is not a requirement to enter the class. The class is also currently running on Friday nights, however, we are looking into starting another class on a different day. Solstice Parade Belly Dance Events

Dear Dancer,

Wednesday May 2nd is Opening night for our Solstice Parade Season.
It’s free. Come, look, see, eat, drink, and hear about all our plans and progress so far.
Be inspired! Get enthralled! There is a lot to reveal!
It’s exciting!
We need drummers musicians, pyramid ensemble volunteers, belly dancers, extras such as Gods and Goddesses!

At the open house all will be explained. Plus we (you) are going to build a Pyramid in my studio on Wednesday night. We are going to video tape it and put it on You Tube so wear something danceable! Tell any interested folks! We are recruiting volunteers here!

UP COMING ASPECTS
Parade Classes;
6 weeks of classes where we learn 5-6 dances we use in the parade and other events. You do not have to be in the parade to get a lot out of this class. Sharpen skills get exercise and have fun. We hope you will choose to be in the parade but every year dancers simply take the course.

JUNE 16th; The Fremont Solstice Parade we are first in the parade and so will be pretty much done and able to watch the rest of the parade this year

JUNE 16th; Sustainable Solstice Faire;
This is a new festival being put on by a consortium of organizations to raise money for the Solstice Parade and bring awareness of community issues. Beer Garden and performance stages. Delilah, and the Billion Bellies will be featured after the Solstice Pageant on the main Stage with Music by “House of Tarab” 6-7 PM !!! So our parade class will also have aspects of this project as well.

About the Parade;

It’s fun! It’s an achievement, It’s where dancers work together for a larger vision. I have been doing this for about 17-18 years now. Each year women see our beauty, joy and pride in the parade and are inspired to start belly dancing the next week. 2 years ago 15 year old Nicole saw us and got inspired to be in the parade the next year. She is 17 years old now and has been a featured dancer at Costa's and Taki’s Mad Greek and she teaches at her high school!
